Claudia Chan Host, Podcast "Extraordinary Asian Women"; Courage Coach, Canada

Claudia Chan shares how self-awareness, emotional acceptance, courage, and celebrating growth can help parents raise confident, loving, and courageous children.

Raising Confidence

As parents, we want our kids to grow up with confidence, able to courageously navigate their lives and live to their full potential. Yet high expectations and personal shortcomings can sometimes lead parents to act in ways that may unintentionally hold children back.

Chan reflects on coming from Hong Kong to Canada at age 11. Her parents went above and beyond to give her opportunities, while also passing on limiting beliefs shaped by culture and upbringing. For much of her life, she lacked self-confidence and felt that her voice was not valuable enough to be heard.

Breaking the Mold

She describes feeling trapped in her reality, without the capacity to break out of the mold she was in. She felt a constant need to perform in order to prove her worth, fearing judgment and criticism if she did not.

Through self-awareness, accepting negative emotions, and cultivating courage, Chan learned to stand up for herself despite other people's opinions. She gave herself time to explore her dreams and build her skills, becoming certified as a Life Coach and an award-winning speaker.

She celebrated each win and failure as part of the path to where she is today. Through this growth, she also saw an impact on her son: his ability to speak up for himself, process difficult emotions, take on challenges, and grow into a confident young person.

Five Things to Do
