Aretha Taylor shares a personal journey of childhood trauma, emotional healing, and returning to the root cause of pain in order to stop generational cycles and empower others.
Overview
Growing up with a mother who had a mental health illness was very painful for Aretha Taylor and caused her to battle many emotional traumas.
Her mother had bipolar disorder for most of her life. The family knew something was different, but they did not have a name for it then and had never heard of bipolar disorder.
Her mother had suffered traumas that she never dealt with and was too ashamed to speak about, including raising eight children on her own with very little to no resources.
The Root Cause of Pain
Aretha's mother was culturally taught not to talk about pain, but to move on and pretend it never happened, no matter how traumatic it was.
This led to chronic depression and to her becoming mentally and emotionally unstable. She was mentally, emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive to her children.
Aretha carried anger and rage for a very long time. She experienced depression as a child and, as a young adult, had suicidal thoughts and feelings of anxiety.
She did not have anyone to speak with about what she was going through or how she felt, so she submerged those feelings, and they manifested in different ways.
Beginning the Healing
It was not until her late twenties that Aretha began to share her childhood traumas with friends. That is when she noticed her healing begin.
She did not want to become like her mother, so she made the choice to stop the cycle and go back to the root cause of her pain by talking about what caused it.
Her mother became her inspiration for emotional healing.
